Happy New Year! It’s so crazy that we are officially in 2019, the year we get hitched. If you saw my first post in the Wedding Wednesday series about our engagement you know Travis and I got engaged December 22, 2017 and are getting married on October 5, 2019.
Now that we are officially in the wedding year I feel like I need to get seriously serious about wedding planning. We have most of the big vendors locked down but it’s the little things like food choices and flower arrangements where I’m all over the place. Any other brides with me?
I’ve spent a lot of time recently trying to find the best resources for inspiration for all things wedding related, especially for those little details that make the wedding day unique to us as a couple.
I was super excited when a few weeks back Artisan Books sent me this beautiful book to check out and asked me to partner with them to give one of you your very own copy! Even just looking at the cover I knew this book was going to be special. First off, the images are so beautiful! I’ll be displaying it on my coffee table from now and even post-wedding. But, once I started reading through I realized how packed full of useful information, tips, and tricks for wedding planning this book is.
I brought it along this past week when we traveled down to Lake Gaston, NC – where we are getting married! – for the holidays with family and read it cover to cover. The book covers everything from setting a budget, to different tent options for outdoor receptions, to even the smallest of details like your wedding favors.
As a former wedding calligrapher/stationer (did ya know that?) I loved the section about stationery and the breakdown of the guidelines for wording of wedding invitations, envelopes, and even paper differences. For most, these little details can be confusing and feel stressful. Things like, whose parents are listed first on the invite, what’s the proper way to address an envelope, and what type of printing do you go with.
An added bonus to all of the useful tips and information in the book is that the photographs inside are beyond gorgeous. You truly feel like you are holding a perfectly curated Pinterest board in your hands.
For books/magazines like this I take a post-it and place them on the pages that I want to use as inspiration to show my wedding planner or to take to a meeting with a vendor. You can even take a picture of the page on your phone and add it to a separate album so everything is easily accessible.

About Modern Weddings by Kelsey McKinnon:
The secret to planning a deeply personal and meaningful wedding has nothing to do with budget. It’s about creating a celebration that reflects a couple’s core values. Translating those values is the work of Modern Wedding, an information-filled guide with hundreds of creative ideas and beautiful, inspiring photographs for readers to look at and say, “This feels like us.”
The book unpacks every element of a wedding—stationery, attire, seating plans, flowers and tablescapes, food and drink, gifts—with examples that will appeal to couples who care about how things are made but are not overly influenced by trends. The emphasis is on natural surroundings, seasonal flowers and food, modern dresses, minimalist ceremony structures, and naked cakes. Photographs of real weddings—“case studies” like a destination fete in Tuscany, a house party in Brooklyn, and a New Agey revel in Kauai—show how all the pieces can come together into a unique and expressive whole. Extensive practical information and resources give readers access to all the help they need for their own unique celebration.
